I want to bring your attention to one of the major educational issues that only receives minimal press cover. Governor Bobby Jindal (Louisiana) is pushing forward legislation to merge Southern University at New Orleans (member institution of the only Historically Black University System - Southern University System) and the University of New Orleans (a member of the University of Louisiana System). While constituents on both side of the issue cite different pros and cons, this can have huge implications for other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States.
Please do not sleep on this issue because HBCUs have provided many people with an opportunity to be valuable contributors to society. I encourage you to read up on this issue and follow it closely.

HBCUs produce 75% of Blacks with a PhD in the US. If we eradicate these institutions it will inevitably negatively impact the number of Black PHD within our society... forever changing the landscape of American higher education and countless fields. This eradication takes place overtly (shutting institutions down) or covertly (mergers). What is our responsibility? Southern is an example of this eradication...
