This is definitely a problem that we have in our African American community. It is not limited to just DC, Chicago, but everywhere. It is sad that many parents cannot afford to take time off to go sit at schools with their young children, but it is a reality that many teachers take advantage of. As an educator, as hard as it may seem some time, promoting self-efficacy and hard work in the class is needed to assist with our African American males especially. It is already taught to them the negative of their ancestors, so to encourage them to succeed these tools are needed.
